Golf Tournament 2010
Golf Tournament Beats the Heat and Rain

Eleventh annual event again benefits The Senior Source

The 11th Annual TIAA Charity Golf Tournament Sept. 14 raised $20,450 in donations and pledges for The Senior Source, a non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for senior citizens in our community. Despite heavy rains a week before the tournament, the Woodbridge Golf Club course was in good shape and a gentle breeze helped blunt the September heat for an exciting day of golf.

Bob Law, a director and chair of the finance committee for The Senior Source, thanked golfers for their contributions and gave a brief review of the programs benefitting seniors. TIAA President Betty Purkey presented a check representing the proceeds to Bob Law and Stephanie Grossman, Director of Special Events for The Senior Source.

Winners of the Golf Trophy this year are (left to right) David Koestner, Kevin Koestner, Joe Shelle and Mike Hayden (not shown) who was unable to attend the presentation ceremony. Photo courtesy of Jessica Stewart.

Since 2001, the TIAA has raised more than $240,000 to benefit The Senior Source. Stephanie and her associates have commented many times on the importance of the TIAA to their organization and continue to express their appreciation for the support.

The support of Barbara Blanchar, a PGA Teaching Pro from St. Louis, was also recognized. She is the sister of exTIer, Joan Nichols, and volunteered her time to assist in the tournament by conducting a clinic for golfers and taking long shots on a difficult hole in exchange for donations to The Senior Source. Assisted by Margaret Eckert, daughter of Courtney and Dee Miller, an additional $440 was raised. Barbara’s efforts along with an extra contribution by golfer John Gibson made it possible for us get well over the $20,000 level.

The contributions from eleven Corporate Sponsors was recognized along with the gifts from more than 60 retirees who mailed in donations as hole sponsors, cart sponsors, or individual donors. Courtney Miller thanked all the volunteers who helped with the logistics to make the tournament a success, especially TIAA Administrator, Jessica Stewart and Stephanie Grossman of The Senior Source.

Courtney announced the winning teams as follows:

  • 1st place: Kevin Koestner, David Koestner, Mike Hayden and Joe Shelle
  • 2nd place: Doyle Baker, John White, Ed Pennington and Jim Powell
  • 3rd place: Gary Williams, Johnny Dozier, Chris Emmett and Mary Norman
  • 4th place: John Gibson, Mark Gibson, Buck Downs and Ed Tidwell

Golfers were also recognized for the following accomplishments:

  • Long Drive, Men: Kevin Koestner
  • Long Drive, Ladies: Karisti Shankle
  • Closest to Pin (4 winners):
Jim Powell, Andy Higgins, Sam Duyka and Jim May

Courtney also recognized the underwriters of the tournament – Texans Credit Union and Texas Instruments. Their contributions cover the cost of the tournament, so that 100% of donations go directly to The Senior Source.

TIAA would like to thank all the sponsors, golfers, and individual contributors who worked together to raise more than $20,000 in a difficult economic environment.
