Tom Landry Exhibit, Fair Park, Wednesday, Feb. 2. -
Brought back by popular demand - over 120,000 people viewed this exhibit
during the State Fair - is the buttoned-up duster, the coat of the
working cowboy and perfectly suited to the Texas historical setting. But
the hombre who wore this one was a cowboy with a capital C - Tom Landry,
the stoic head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. And it's just one facet of a
man whose influence stretched far beyond the football field. From his
varsity letter from Mission High School's district championship team in
1940 to the fur-collared trench coat and matching fur cap he wore on the
sidelines at the "Ice Bowl" in Green Bay to the red, white and blue
Byron Nelson Classic golf bag he used when he made a hole-in-one, the
exhibit offers a glimpse of a man most knew from his spot on the
sidelines. The details of Landry's military service, an area largely
unknown, is fascinating as he served as a co-pilot on a B-17 completing
30 missions in WWII. The exhibit follows Landry's chronology - Mission
High School, the college years, his time with the New York Giants, the
Cowboys years, then looping back to items from his personal life. A
television in one corner plays the video from Landry's memorial service
at the Meyerson Symphony Center, ending with Landry's favorite hymn,
"Amazing Grace." We'll leave Texins at 10 a.m., visit the exhibit, have
lunch at Big Shucks on Mockingbird Lane at our own expense, and return
about 2 p.m. Cost is $9 for members and $10 for nonmembers. Please
register by Jan. 26.
General Motors Plant, Arlington,
Monday, Feb. 28 - Depart Texins Activity Center on TI bus at 9
a.m. for a 90-minute tour of the General Motors Plant followed by a late
lunch at Texas Palomina's Buffet at our own expense. No open-toed shoes,
children under 10, or electronics are allowed on GM plant tours. We will
return to Texins at approximately 3 p.m. Cost is $10 per member and $11
per nonmember. Please register by Feb. 21.
