April Community Service Event Help change the world – one light bulb at a time! Join us on Thursday, April 22, as we work with The Senior Source to show Dallas-area seniors how to use less energy – and save money – by making the switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). The Senior Source/RSVP will provide transportation to and from Texins Activity Center. We will meet at 8:45 a.m. at Dallas Texins for a short training session. We will then board the bus for our destination. We will finish in the early afternoon and be returned back to Texins. To volunteer, please email volunteers@tialumni.org or call the TIAA office at 214-567-8444. New Lifetime Members In March, TIAA gained 11 Lifetime Members: Gene Carlone, James Hellums, Leslie Herling, Ana Maria Lee, Jean Nark, Tegwin Pulley, Sam Shichijo, Tim Snodgrass, Joseph Spinelli, Charles E. Williams and Larry Winters. Nearly a quarter of TIAA members hold lifetime membership. Class on Digital Photography TIAA is sponsoring a four-hour class on how to use your digital camera by David Drake, a professional photographer and TIAA member. Material to be covered includes setting up your camera, capturing the best possible picture, downloading your images, processing and backing up your images, archiving your pictures and performing searches to find those cherished events later on. Bring both your camera and owner’s manual to the class so that David can provide hands-on help. The class will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, in Conference Room C1-C2 at the Texins Activity Center. The class is limited to 25 and is free to TIAA members. A 15-page handout will be provided. To register, contact TIAA at 214-567-8444. Senior Discounts We are always alert for anything that will help our members economically and have recently learned about the senior discount at Kroger's grocery stores. If you already have a Kroger Plus Shopper's Card, just stop by one of their service desks and say you want to receive the senior discount of 10% on all store-brand items. Or, if you don't have a card, stop by the service desk, fill out an application for one and check the box for senior discounts. (You may have to show proof of your age.) It takes about three days to be processed; but, at the end of that time, you will see an item on your next receipt saying "SR DSCT" and the amount you have saved. If you know of any other senior discounts, please let us know. Check out other supplier discounts on our website at www.tialumni.org/discount/. Cottonwood Park Cleanup TI retirees are invited to participate in the 16th annual Cottonwood Park Cleanup on Saturday, April 17. (Please note that this date is a change from that announced in the First Quarter 2010 TI Alumni News.) TI and Keep Dallas Beautiful need volunteers from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. that morning to pick up trash and help beautify Cottonwood Park in Dallas. While Keep Dallas Beautiful will provide tools, trash bags and refreshments, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own small tools and wear gloves and rubber boots for their protection. Boxed lunches will be available for participating volunteers after the cleanup. The park is located a half mile west of TI's North Campus at 8500 Midpark Road in Dallas. To register, contact Alex Aguilar at alexaguilar@ti.com with the number of people in your party, T-shirt sizes and sandwich request (turkey or vegetarian). Experience a cataclysmic earthquake or find yourself on the ocean floor. Step into a real Texas Twister and emerge safely to inspect what 200 mph winds can do. Then mingle with Hollywood's most famous stars - past and present - in Louis Tussuad's Palace of Wax with over 200 lifelike figures. Relive unforgettable moments from Hollywood classics and take your own pictures. We will leave the Texins Activity Center at 9:30 a.m., enter the Museums at 10 a.m., then go to the Golden Corral restaurant for lunch at our own expense, and return to Texins about 2:30 p.m. Cost of $20 per member and $22 per nonmember includes entry fees. Please register by April 13. Clark Gardens at Weatherford - Tuesday, May 11 - Visit spectacular gardens that have been featured on HGTV's Great American Gardens in addition to numerous magazines, newspapers and other publications. Three different G-scale model garden trains on 700 feet of track meander through a landscape of natural vegetation, trestles and small streams. Paths weave under seven-foot-high willow trestles next to a six-foot waterfall and over little bridges in the Garden Train area. "Clark Station" houses incredible towns of scaled-down buildings made of plant materials such as poppy seeds, acorns, grapevine tendrils, cinnamon sticks and pinecone scales. Over 100 trees lining the trails surrounding Emerald Lake are the genuine offspring of original historical trees that bore witness to the lives and events that shaped our nation, including a descendent of the Johnny Appleseed tree. We will depart Texins at 9 a.m., tour the gardens from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., then eat lunch at our own expense at the gardens and return about 3 p.m. Cost is $18 per member and $20 per nonmember.
