Edge of Life Seminar

Come listen to Lee Hancock, author of the “Edge of Life” articles that appeared in the Dallas Morning News in December. Ms. Hancock spent a year exploring efforts to improve end-of-life medical care.  Lee interviewed experts and attended national and regional conferences and trainings in palliative care.  1-3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 at Plano Centre, 2000 E. Scott Burns Seminar

The Senior Source will again host a financial seminar for older adults featuring nationally syndicated business columnist Scott Burns.  Mr. Burns’ talk,  “Recovering Your Financial Security:  Turning Lemons into Lemonade,” will take place on Thursday, February 19, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Temple Emanu-El, Tobian Hall, 8500 Hillcrest Rd., Dallas. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. A minimum donation of $5 is suggested.  Proceeds benefit the many programs of The Senior Source.  This year’s event will also include a book signing featuring Burns’ latest work, Spend ‘til the End: The Revolutionary Guide to Raising Your Living Standard, Today and When You Retire.  Attendees can purchase a copy of the book and get the author’s autograph, as well.  To register, please contact The Senior Source at 214-823-5700, ext. 219 or email SEPD@TheSeniorSource.org.

“King Tut and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs” – Wednesday, Feb. 18 – Experience a once-in-a-lifetime visit to the world of King Tut at the Dallas Museum of Art to explore the figures who guided ancient Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.  The extensive array of more than 130 extraordinary artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamen and other ancient Egyptian sites features 50 of Tutankhamen's burial objects.  Leave the Texins Activity Center at 11:30 a.m., enjoy lunch on your own, enter the exhibit at 2 p.m., and return to Texins about 5 p.m.   Please call 214-567-8444 to register as we only have a limited number of tickets.   Price of $41 for TIAA members and $46 for nonmembers includes exhibit admission and transportation.  Register now.  

TI Jazz Band at the Eisemann Center – Sunday, Feb. 22 Hear the renowned Texas Instruments Jazz Band in Richardson’s premiere venue.  The TI Jazz Band is a full 20-piece big band consisting of saxes, trombones, trumpets, a rhythm section and a vocalist.  Terell Stafford is joining the band today and he has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player”.  Ride the DART light rail to within one block of the Eisemann Center, 2351 Performance Dr., Richardson.  Purchase tickets for $14 at Eisemann or ahead of time online.  Meet other TIAA members in the lobby at 2:30 p.m. so we can sit together.  Performance starts at 3 p.m.  Registration is not required.

Senior Chair Fit

The Dallas Texins Activity Center has begun an exercise program focusing specifically on the needs of seniors.  This class is designed for anyone wanting to stretch, strengthen and work on balance.  It is ideal for someone who is looking for a supportive environment in a class that does not include high impact exercises.  Instead it teaches a wide range of moves from a seated position or standing position using support.  Hand weights, exercise tubes/bands and balance bars are provided.  If you are looking for a class that combats osteoporosis, this is it.  Come enjoy the soothing assortment of music, great people and a supportive atmosphere. The class meets every Thursday from 10:15 to 11 a.m.  There is no cost for members of Texins.  Contact Kazette Dickerson, 214-567-9151 at the Dallas Texins Activity Center.
